Elections, Death Squads and Balochistan

It does not come as a shock to most in Balochistan that military establishment is now backing death squad leaders to participate in elections and join the ranks of parliamentarians to carry out their crimes. The situation in Balochistan is totally different on what is being showed in the mainstream media. Death Squad leaders are mainly targeting and threatening political activist, human rights workers and media personnel of dire consequences if they report anything on their activities for elections i.e. coercing opposition contestant and their families, target killing relatives of political workers and in some cases to the extent of attacking people homes and killing them on spot. The recent deadly attack on Ali Jan Baloch Member of Central Committee BNM being one.

The hope for a democratic and free Balochistan is highly unlikely in upcoming Balochistan where most of the political leadership is been replaced by military establishment blue eyed Nawabs, Sardars and Mullahs. It is also interesting to note that how print and electronic media is trying to distort the truth and prove that the establishment pawns are the actual political leadership of Balochistan taking part in what they deem will be a free and fair election in a region where travelling out of Quetta City has become nearly impossible owing to poor security situation and rule of Death Squads in the Province.

Expecting peace and voter outcome in upcoming election is highly unlikely in the current scenario where the matter of elections selection is left to Death Squads and their deadly terrorist squads. It’s no surprise the Chief Election Commissioner and Chief Justice of Pakistan along with other establishment allies have turned a blind eye to the miseries of people in Balochistan and the upcoming elections is not expected to bring any resort to ever growing miseries of the people. Expect more brutality, bloodshed and chaos in Balochistan elections.

Occupied Shaheed Balach Marri House

Shafiq Mengal mastermind behind the shadowy anti-Baloch armed group, the Baloch Musla Defai Tanzeem, with the help of the Pakistani intelligence agencies have occupied Shaheed Balach Marri home on Arbab karam Khan Road according to sources. The armed guards have occupied Shaheed Balach Marri house after the car bomb attack and have ransacked all the personal belongings of the family in extreme violation of tribal culture and norms. Sand bag guard shelters have been made on both the houses where Shaheed Balach and his family used to reside. The body guards of Shafiq Mengal also barred the media persons from covering the incident and tortured a photographer of local newspaper and broke his camera.

The once peaceful area has been turned in to a war zone as one resident described the situation. “Our families are scared and we do not feel safe even at our homes because of this occupation. The armed guards are constantly violating our privacy and purdah which could have never happened when Shaheed Balach or his brother Harybair Marri lived here”. Another resident a medical store owner described the situation as a coward act. Now going home has become a agony with all the bodyguards and check posts made by Shafique Mengals armed militia men.

The end result of this cowardly act remains to be seen but people here see it as an act of aggression and provocation by Shafique Mengal "the intelligence conman"!

Car Snatching, Kidnapping and Robberies in Balochistan

PART 1 Gone in 60 Seconds

The law and order situation in Balochistan is at its darkest moment. The Bamboo government believes the foreign involvement is resulting in the poor law and order situation with ever rising car stealing, snatching, kidnapping and robberies.

Car stealing and snatching has become a normal routine affair in Quetta and surrounding areas. Every other person you encounter has gone through the tragic incident where his valuable vehicle has been stolen from him or one of his relatives. The ever rising crime of car stealing and snatching has made the life of local people miserable. The police are hopeless in helping you find your lost valuable and the tribal elders are providing protection to these outfits according to the people who have suffered. So who is involved in these crimes and why does it never get noticed in mainstream media? Lens of Balochistan investigates!

Mr. Nazar Lehri is one of the conman operating the outfit in the area of Sariab who also enjoys protection from the local police and tribal elders. According to him each car snatcher is paid Rs20, 000-to 100,000 for the job depending upon the vehicle. Suzuki being their favorite vehicle for its huge market and easy disposal. Police estimates that hundreds of men are involved in the car-snatching business but around 15 big players are said to be leading the mafia that include the Raisani family, Lehris, Jattaks, Langoves and famous Zehri brother.

Each outfit has their own areas of operation: The Chief Minister younger brother and the Home Minister himself are famous and hold the largest share due to their influence and ownership of dozens of outfits involved in car snatching and stealing not just only in Quetta but all across Balochistan. Various officials from not only the police, but other organizations such as the FC, at check posts are suspected of also taking a share on stolen cars when these vehicles make their way outside the city.

Its time Balochistan liberation forces unite to take action against these outfits run by the Raisani family, Zehri family, Lehri Family, Jattak family and langove brothers.

Balochistan Saga: The Executions Continue….

Sadly, executions, decapitations, and tortured, mutilated bodies are nothing new in Baluchistan. Everyday without fail a new headline will be made of the latest victim along with the running tally of executions for the month and year. It is very similar to the stock market figures we are seeing during this global economic crisis, except our gruesome figures never decline.

Torture and mutilation of bodies dead and alive is more problematic, if only because it is odious to civilized society. Throughout the years, those cultures which have "seen the light" have been horrified by the desecration of bodies committed by barbarians of other cultures. We think of the Nazis in World War II who justified torture and mutilation of live bodies for "scientific" purposes. The communists in Russia, especially under Stalin, committed similar atrocities on ethnic groups. The Khmer Rouge beheaded and chopped the limbs from innocent people and left them by the thousands in the killing fields of Cambodia. European tribes beheaded their foes posting the heads along roads or at the town gates as a grisly warning to those who would oppose them. The Catholic Church in Europe, especially Spain, during the Inquisition tortured and mutilated those who it thought were possessed by the devil or those it simply wanted to get rid of for political reasons.

Similarly in Baluchistan the military continues the barbaric saga where bodies are dumped on desolate mountains or empty city roads, bearing the scars of great cruelty. Arms and legs are snapped; faces are bruised and swollen. Flesh is sliced with knives or punctured with drills; genitals are singed with electric prods. In some cases the bodies are unrecognizable, sprinkled with lime or chewed by wild animals. All have a gunshot wound in the head.

Surprisingly the army alleged responsible for the horrible barbaric acts “considers the killing of missing people an abhorrent act.” Gen Javed Zia while talking to media dispelled the perception that the army, FC or any other agency was involved in such killings and said that it was not the policy of the army leadership".

In war or conflicts of such nature, truth is the first casualty. Who is abducting the Baloch people and dumping their mutilated tortured bodies remains a mystery to the military and Pakistani media. The stunning lack of interest in Balochistan's greatest murder mystery shows the resolve of the government and the military in solving Balochistan issue. The mighty military men disowns involvement of intelligence agencies in committing such barbaric acts at least in front of the media while in gathering of personal nature they openly claim how they are inflicting miseries on the Baloch people. The Wild Wild West mindset did not got them anywhere in Bangladesh and surely the same strategy will get them nowhere in Balochistan.

The country's powerful military and its unaccountable intelligence gang of sadistic serial killers are running the barbaric show in Baluchistan. Everyday a new headline is made of the latest victim of these sadistic serial killers. The General in his conference made another remarkable statement, that `patriotic elements` had hit back against Baloch insurgents and those involved in desecrating the Pakistani flag. The so called “Patriotic Elements” are the creation of intelligence agencies that are also spotted around roaming in city with their private militias in non tax paid smuggled vehicles with jet black tinted glasses.

Rule of law and supremacy of law have no value in Balochistan. Might is right and intelligence gangs rule the law. If the current strategy of executions, decapitations, torture, mutilation of dead bodies continue than the hope for resolving Balochistan issue can never be achieved. The only way the issue can be resolved now is by showing sincerity and admission to the guilt of committing genocide against the Baloch people and bringing to justice the people who are committing crimes against Baloch nation and give Baloch nation their just and due rights. If the Military, Government or who ever is running the show in Balochistan thinks that by forming militias i.e. “Patriotic Elements” and letting them target Baloch nationalists and intellects will resolve the issue is surely not understanding the gravity of Balochistan issue. Similar tactics were used in Bangladesh where private militias like Al-Badr and Al-Shams were formed for conducting a mass killing campaign against Bengali nationalists, civilians, scholars, students, doctors and political activists.

The same saga is being repeated again, the same strategy is being adopted again and the same tools of death has been used again to deter what the army thinks as an insurgency. The number of killings and deaths will lead to more people joining the ranks of the Sarmachars in order to retaliate to the atrocities committed to them or their family members by the military establishment. At the moment it seems that their will be no end to this sorry saga of executions in Balochistan.

Genocide in Balochistan 2011

The mass killings in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) in 1971 vie with the annihilation of the Soviet POWs, the holocaust against the Jews, and the genocide in Rwanda as the most concentrated act of genocide in the twentieth century. In an attempt to crush forces seeking independence for East Pakistan, the West Pakistani military regime unleashed a systematic campaign of mass murder which aimed at killing millions of Bengalis. Similarly Pakistani military is again repeating the unsuccessful tactics it used in Bangladesh against the Baloch’s in Balochistan.

If you have not heard of the genocide in Balochistan, don’t worry: neither have most Pakistanis. Newspaper reports from Balochistan are buried quietly on the inside pages, cloaked in euphemisms or, quite often, not published at all.

“The bodies surface quietly, like corks bobbing up in the dark. They come in twos and threes, a few times a week, dumped on desolate mountains or empty city roads, bearing the scars of great cruelty. Arms and legs are snapped; faces are bruised and swollen. Flesh is sliced with knives or punctured with drills; genitals are singed with electric prods. In some cases the bodies are unrecognisable, sprinkled with lime or chewed by wild animals. All have a gunshot wound in the head”. Guardian 2011

Guardian newspaper article gives an account of what people of Balochistan are witnessing. The role of so called independent Pakistani media has also been a shameful one. I remember very well when three tortured and desolated bodies were discovered in the area of Sariab road which had no mention on the news channel but a much more spectacular event “a cow was drowning in a river” was given live coverage on all TV channels.

The genocide of Baloch people will continue on and the military along with it’s puppet democratic regime will keep on denying the facts till we will see the fall of Balochistan which ultimately will be the downfall of Pakistan.

Anti Pakistan Sentiments

A lot have been said and written about anti Pakistan sentiments in Balochistan but the situation keeps worsening off. Cricket which is being followed and loved in all parts of Pakistan is also a unifying factor for the federation. But the recent world cup loss to India sparked a festival like atmosphere in Baloch parts of the Province.

The festivities started with gun shots lasting for hours and distribution of sweets among friends and neighbors. I was also shocked to see the joy of Pakistan losing against the arch enemy India but such as become the level of hatred that what was once a unifying factor is no more.
